The Land

Westhampton's roots trace back to the 1640s when English settlers expanded west from Southampton, acquiring land from the Shinnecock Tribe in the 1666 Quogue Purchase — an area once called Ketchaponack.

It soon evolved from a quiet colonial settlement into a cultural hub where artists and creatives were drawn to its natural beauty, inspiring landscape painting, photography, and later, a vibrant arts scene.

Today, it’s a year-round coastal community with a small-town vibe, and beaches, farmlands, and lively downtown with shops, restaurants, and the Westhampton Performing Arts Center at its cultural heart.
